No.

It's echoing in his head, as he falls – the words of his brother, his father-and-king, the words that tell him that they will never, ever accept him, or what he has done.

No.

Such a small word, really. It applies to so much – for instance, the idea that there is no way to travel between the Nine Realms without the Bifrost.

But how could one say those Realms are found amidst the branches of Yggdrasil, and then forget that those branches themselves can be traveled? Falling from Asgard is dangerous – but there are other branches, lower down, and Loki has never been afraid of falling from a tree.

He's even done it on purpose, once or twice, before this latest fall. So he knows what to expect: a star-ridden darkness, the knots and whorls of the World Tree beside him, a door –

A door?

That's different.

Moreover, it's falling with him, at least for the moment.

Will that last?

Does he have time to stop and consider whether or not this is safe?

Is anything safe, now?

No.

Loki stretches forth his hand – the hand that has so recently let go of his father's spear – and, in opening the door, falls through it.

comments
